DSA: Democratic Socialist threatens to shoot up MAGA event at Trump Hotel

An anonymous supporter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) threatened in a tweet to commit a mass shooting at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. The threat was made in response to a tweet by pro-Trump activist Cassandra Fairbanks, who was attending a Make America Great Again meet-up at the Trump Hotel later that evening. The DSA supporter responded to Fairbank’s tweet with a picture of a handgun and said, “I am coming with a gun and I expect to get numerous bloodstained MAGA hats as trophies.” According to the Daily Mail, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Department stated that they have opened up an investigation into the threat. The Twitter account that made the threat has since been deleted. [Source: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6157305/DC-police-respond-mass-shooting-threat-MAGA-event-Trump-Hotel.html]

Solecast: Black Rose Federation building grassroots working class power

The revolutionary anarchist podcast Solecast interviewed a member of the anarcho-communist group Black Rose Federation (BRF) this week. The BRF activist stated in the interview that they have “chapters across North America” and that the group utilizes “Specifismo,” which is an anarcho-communist disposition summarized as the following:

  • The need for a specifically anarchist organization built around a unity of ideas and praxis.
  • The use of the specifically anarchist organization to theorize and develop strategic political and organizing work.
  • Active involvement in and building of autonomous and popular social movements via social insertion.

The following is a list of subjects that were discussed by the BRF activist during the podcast:

  • BRF’s organizing principles
  • BRF’s approach to building working class power from below
  • Grassroots power vs local politics vs electoral politics

West Virginia: IWW forces the Patriots of Appalachia into rebranding themselves

The West Virginia chapter of the International Workers of the World (IWW) tweeted this week their “On-the-ground and online actions have forced the far-right group Patriots of Appalachia to, in their words, ‘rebrand’ themselves.” According to West Virginia IWW, there has been a decrease in Patriots of Appalachia’s flying and leafleting since their “joint mutual campaigns with @HollerNetwork and @epwvdsa began.” (Analyst comment: The Holler Network describes itself as “Resisting the rise of fascism and white supremacy in the hills, hollers, and valleys of Appalachia.”) (Analyst comment: “EPWVDSA” stands for Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia Democratic Socialists of America, and describes itself as a DSA organizing committee on Twitter.)

West Virginia IWW provided evidence of Patriots of Appalachia’s rebranding with a tweet by the former Patriots of Appalachia account that states that they are “rebranding this account to revving Tribalism which better suits what our goal is. We want to give advice to young men and women to better themselves and their communities.” West Virginia IWW further states that Patriots of Appalachia’s rebranding efforts are just “more white nationalism, under a different name.” [Source: https://twitter.com/WestVirginiaIWW/status/1043238903958982657] [Source: https://twitter.com/HollerNetwork] [Source: https://twitter.com/epwvdsa]

The account included a link to Leau Est La Vie Camp’s general fund on GoFundMe in the tweet and asked activists to “Please help @NoBayouBridge members get back on the road! DONATE to get some new tires for these vehicles.” As of 24 September, 2018, the No Bayou Bridge fundraiser has received $47,637 of it’s $100,000 goal from 665 people since it was created on 2 August, 2018. [Source: https://twitter.com/NoBBP_Global/status/1043950736902631424]

Missouri: St. Louis still recovering a year after protests

The Associated Press published an article this week titled “St. Louis police still recovering a year after protests.” According to the Associated Press, “Some St. Louis police officers are still struggling with injuries more than a year after protestors took to the streets when a white former officer was acquitted in the death of a black suspect.” The Associated Press further states in the article that around thirty officers were injured during the protests and at least five required hospitalization. (Analyst comment: One of the officers is still on leave due to his injuries he received during the protests. This is an exceptionally noteworthy detail because the injuries he sustained were inflicted upon him by other St. Louis officers, who “mistook him for a protester and arrested him while he was undercover.” We’ve known that it’s very common for police departments and federal agencies to have undercover officers and agents participating in these kinds of events. This posits the following questions:

  • How often do undercover agents partake in these kinds of events?
  • How many of these protestors are really protestors?
  • To what extent are these agents responsible for instigating the massive amounts of violence and damage that costs citizens their peace of mind and taxpayers more money?
  • How many of these events do police orchestrate themselves?

Keystone Pipeline: U.S. Government might use counterterrorism tactics against pipeline protestors

Fortune Magazine published an article this week that details government documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union of Montana. Fortune Magazine writes in the article that the documents reveal the federal government is “preparing an aggressive tactical response in anticipation of renewed Keystone XL Pipeline protests.”  Evidence of this according to ACLU Montana is that the records provide “substantial evidence of federal preventative measures against Keystone XL protests, such as a Department of Justice ‘anti-terrorism’ training in Fort Harrison, Montana, and a DOJ ‘Social Networking and Cyber Awareness’ training in the town of Circle, Montana.” The ACLU also claims the documents reveal discussions between federal officials about creating an “interagency team” that would “deal with the safety and security concerns related to the Keystone XL project.” [Source: http://fortune.com/2018/09/20/keystone-pipeline-protests-aclu/?utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=social-share-article] [Source: https://www.aclu.org/news/new-documents-reveal-government-plans-spy-keystone-xl-protesters]

Texas: ASN Austin criticizes Beto O’Rourke

The Autonomous Student Network of Austin, Texas (ASN-ATX) Twitter account recently criticized Texas Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke on Twitter. The ASN-ATX Twitter account wrote in a serious of tweets that “Since there’s a wave of anti-Bob O’Rourke stuff finally interrupting the liberalism on our feed, a reminder (thread):

Don’t let anybody shame you for not voting, criticizing Bob, ESPECIALLY if u r involved in autonomous organizing, Bc u r doing way more than any Dem campaigner

Friendly reminder that Bob —helped gentrify El Paso —doesn’t wanna #AbolishICE —supports the occupation of Palestine —is a politician. He will sell you out & maintain this entire death machine that is the State/capitalism Bc that’s his JOB

Liberal lesser evilism is a bankrupt game of deciding which populations are disposable so that you can get “your guy” into office. The moralizing about how awful Republicans are is blackmail and a smokescreen obscuring how fucked every politician is (DSA ones too!)

Reminder that electoralism is NOT strategic, despite its pretense of being so You invest more time & resources in maintaining your seat of power & compromising, so you lose most of your initial goals Politicians get replaced, but a strong autonomous movement can last decades

PIR3: What indicators describe other political, social and cultural conflict?

Trump: There will be violence if we lose the House

According to the New York Post, President Trump stated during a meeting this week that there will be “violence” if the Republicans lose their House majority in the November midterm elections:

‘You’re one election away from losing everything that you’ve got…. They will overturn everything that we’ve done and they’ll do it quickly and violently, and violently. There’s violence. When you look at Antifa and you look at some of these groups — these are violent people…. The level of hatred, the level of anger is unbelievable. Part of it is because of some of the things I’ve done for you and for me and for my family, but I’ve done them… . This Nov. 6th election is very much a referendum on not only me, it’s a referendum on your religion, it’s a referendum on free speech and the First Amendment.”

EU: European Union to give Internet firms one hour to remove extremist content

The European Union has announced that it is planning to fine Internet companies such as Google, Facebook and Twitter if they do not “take down extremist content within one hour.” According to ABC News, the executive body of the EU stated that “propaganda that prepares, incites or glorifies acts of terrorism” will be flagged by national authorities, who will then “issue removal orders to the internet companies hosting it.” The fines handed out by the EU to Internet companies who fail to comply with the removals will be up to 4 percent of their annual global turnover. Based on Facebook’s reported $40 billion in revenue for 2017, it could be fined up to $160 million dollars. (Analyst comment: This is a major step towards mass censorship. As Internet companies such as Google and Twitter increase their censorship of people and groups such as Alex Jones and the Proud Boys, we are going to see people on both the right and the left becoming more and more desperate and radicalized. Protests such as the Free Alex Jones Rally that took place in Austin, Texas this weekend are going to become more common and widespread.) [Source: https://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/eu-give-internet-firms-hour-remove-extremist-content-57768368]

Article: What comes first, political education or organizing movements?

An article published on the Socialist blog site Notes From Below this week takes a look at political education and ideology, as well as the power of the working class. In the article, author Rohan Kon analyzes what he believes to be missed opportunities to radicalize “disempowered and seemingly apathetic” people. Kon writes that “an influx of new and eager activists could be enriched by a deeper understanding of… something,” with that something being radicalization through working class empowerment, community organizing and political reeducation.

Kon praises author Saul Alinsky in the article, writing that modern, mainstream community organizing takes it’s direction from Alinsky’s book Rules for Radicals. Kon then states that Alinsky claims he never considered joining the Communist Party, followed by a quote from Alinsky:

“Not at any time. I’ve never joined any organization— not even the ones I’ve organized myself […] philosophically, I could never accept any rigid dogma or ideology, whether it’s Christianity or Marxism […] if you think you’ve got an inside track to absolute truth, you become doctrinaire, humorless and intellectually constipated. The greatest crimes in history have been perpetrated by such religious and political and racial fanatics, from the persecutions of the Inquisition on down to Communist purges and Nazi genocide.”

The author concludes the article by answering the question of whether or not political action or knowledge comes first:

It is organising strategy that shapes an organisation’s ability to educate. Rather than deliberating about what comes first, political education or action, commit to building the sort of permanent, democratic, working class organisation we see from ACORN, moving people into conflict with the ruling elite. That is how to help people to understand not just that collectivism triumphs over individualism, but that there is an ‘us’ and a ‘them’. Fundamentally, the crucial lesson in political education that community organising has the potential to teach is that this is a war, there are two sides, and you need to choose one.
