SITUATIONAL AWARENESS

DHS WARNS OF COMING DOMESTIC EXTREMIST VIOLENCE: The Latest DHS National Terrorism Systems Bulletin released on June 7th warns of a more dynamic threat environment within the U.S. due to an increased risk of violence from domestic extremism. The report cites a growing trend of lone-wolf attacks against minorities, schools, religious organizations, and mass transit.  DHS notes increased violent rhetoric resulting from the US’s inaction on border security, abortion rights, and upcoming mid-term elections. The agency warns that these trends are likely to be exploited by foreign adversaries such as Russia, Iran, and China and malign actors such as Islamic extremist groups to “sow discord, undermine U.S. democratic institutions, and promote or inspire violence.”  The report notes this exploitation largely occurs as a result of malign actors’ use of cyber platforms. – R.P.

U.S. WARNS NORTH KOREA NOT TO CONDUCT UPCOMING NUCLEAR TEST: U.S. officials warned North Korea this week not to conduct an anticipated 7th nuclear test at its Punggye-ri test site. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) is sounding alarms that the North will attempt a nuclear weapons test in the coming days or weeks. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman stated, “Any nuclear tests would be in complete violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions. There would be a swift and forceful response to such a test.” The U.S. Air Force deployed B-1B bombers to Guam last week as a potential response to the North Korean nuclear tests. – M.M.

GEORGIA VOTING MACHINES AT RISK: The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) warned Georgia’s touchscreen-based Dominion voting machines are vulnerable to vote manipulation. In addition to the digital vulnerabilities, CISA says the barcodes printed on ballots could contain votes for un-intended candidates when scanned by election workers. Georgia’s Secretary of State office remains confident in the security of its “real election environment.” – D.M.
