In my area there’s several things I’ve noticed. Every day at one of the intersection lights there’s either a man or a woman selling bundles of flowers.
A few blocks from my house a few girls with a cooler, a table and possibly some rain cover is selling tamales
I hadn’t thought about it this much in a while, but I was out hiking and in a very rural area that doesn’t see much traffic on the weekend, and there was no one out harvesting.
Yet there was a woman out in the middle of nowhere selling “hot tamales” and it was the same setup as the girls near my home.
So I’m just wondering if it truly is innocent selling of a food or if there’s some gray/black market stuff going on
Any thoughts?
This is very common activity all through LATAM, so it is highly likely they’re just repeating an economic pattern they are familiar with. If they’re selling dope or sex on the side, who knows. But what you are seeing isn’t really unusual (unfortunately)
It might be worth a purchase of a dozen tamales to find out more. If she is a budding entrepreneur, it could be a good way to get intel about traffic & worth a few visits to develop rapport. If she is someone being forced to make more money for cartels, that would also be valuable to know.
