Poll: 18% of Democrats believe political violence is justified

According to one research study this year, some 18 percent of Democrats believe that political violence is justified, either a “little” or “a lot.” The same is true for about 14 percent of Republicans.

The survey also found that 42 percent of Americans believe their political opposition is “evil.” That’s nearly 50 million Americans, if the polling is accurate.

Around 20 percent of Democrats and 16 percent of Republicans believe the country would be better off “if large numbers of the opposing party in the public today just died.” [source: pdf]

I’ve made my outlook clear that a “low intensity conflict” is already baked into America’s future. In fact, we’re already seeing it develop through economic, information, political, and cultural warfare — and occasional political violence. (See the last update on the “Second American Civil War”. I’ll write another update for March 2019 — sign up below to receive it by email.)

The New York Times this morning urgently warned about the fallout from the Mueller investigation:

“[A] darker theme is emerging: a message that Mr. Trump’s perceived enemies will pay.”

There may be some truth to that, even as Democrats quickly turn their focus away from re-litigating 2016 and towards winning in 2020.

Is turnabout fair play?

Are we just pretending at this point that we’re not locked into a serious struggle over the future of the country?

President Trump’s troubles may not be over, as there are still ongoing Congressional investigations, and the Southern District of New York has open criminal probes into the Trump Organization and its periphery.

If the result of the Mueller investigation is any indicator, criminal charges are likely to further inflame Leftists against Trump and his supporters, and a lack of criminal charges are likely to inflame Trump supporters against the Left.

It may be well into 2020 before we begin seeing significant violence again, like the kind that occurred through 2016 and early 2017, but I’m betting that Americans on both sides find a way to justify political violence in the future.

  1. Several months ago I replied a comment on the Disqus discussion board for a conservative daily site. It had been posted by a gentleman who believed violence against a certain segment of society, which he defined as ‘white, middle and upper class, and privileged’, was needed to effect change.

My comment was relatively mild, and I agreed with him that some of what he was demanding was legitimate to put on the table and discuss. I also noted that it could be done without violence.

His reply was excoriating, insisting that we are beyond the point of discussion and debate, and in fact violence here, now, was both justified and necessary, and we should know that they are coming for us.

Further discussion was pointless. Since then I have seen this theme being played out in a number of forums – that violence is both justified and necessary. The numbers look more than reasonable. 18% is a large group. If even half of that 18% fall into the ‘truly committed’ column, that’s still a large group intent on mayhem and harm. I may not be a great historian, but I am aware of no instances where The Voice of Reason was not completely overwhelmed and destroyed by those who espouse the ‘justified and necessary’ doctrine. We are fortunate here in that we have an enemy that reveals itself By doing that they give away an advantage they might have had. That they’re willing to do that is a measure of their commitment to ‘change’ on their terms.

  2. For the last few years I have been watching the violence by both sides, though I find the left to be conducting more actual violence then the right. Look at the Anfitna movement, they alone are the worst even to point of conducting combat training. Luck they are just a bunch of morons that can barely throw a good punch. But add in all the attacks on people wearing red MAGA hats. The right besides the looney guy in Fl sending the BS letter bombs I can only find the Charlottesville by the klan types, bunch of ass wipes there.

Polls are polls, never been polled or asked, so I do not accept them as facts.

But I do agree the left is becoming more violent and need watched. I do not call for violence, but the old saying a tooth for a tooth rings true for me. Should I ever be attacked, depending on where I will defend myself, gun, knife, tazor what ever is handy.

  3. Get them jobs so their taxes OR court ordered restitution is used to pay for the damage they did, then double the damage for a fine.

  4. As we know when civil war 2 hits us in the near future these types of people are not going to survive it. When true prepared men that are humble, lowly, meek and in the spirit of righteousness are put into action, it is going to take us several months to bury the dead.
