U.S. military preparing for ‘last resort’ option for North Korea

The U.S. military is quietly preparing for war with North Korea in what it hopes is a last resort option, given the enormity of the task and the belief that war would produce massive casualties for American and South Korean forces and civilians.

The military has been practicing for large-scale war for some time, shifting away from a focus on the low-intensity conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq that have dominated American military strategy for more than 15 years.

That includes night drops of airborne forces, movement of personnel and equipment behind ‘enemy lines,’ and reserve forces practicing how to set up mobilization centers designed to move troops overseas quickly — centers that have largely remained dormant through the years as the U.S. fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Beginning next month, the Pentagon will also shift more special forces troops to the Korean peninsula in what some believe is the beginning of the formation of a Korea-based task force similar to those fighting in Iraq and Syria. Some believe the forces are heading to South Korea as part of counterterrorism efforts ahead of the Olympic Games to be held in the country in February. But others believe the number of special forces troops the Pentagon is sending number far more than conventional counter-terrorism operations. [source]
