SITUATIONAL AWARENESS
BIDEN CALLS ON CONGRESS TO STOP GUN VIOLENCE: In a primetime address to the American people, President Biden urged Congress to take up stricter gun control legislation. The President wants to renew the assault weapons ban, limit the number of rounds in a magazine, and expand background checks. Senate Democrats view Sen. Cornyn (R-TX) as a potential mediator between the parties. “I’m not talking about restricting the rights of law-abiding citizens under the Second Amendment. I’m talking about identifying people with criminal and mental health problems that are a threat to themselves and others,” Cornyn said. – D.M.
US AMBO: ‘UP TO UKRAINE’ ON MISSILE STRIKES: Recently confirmed U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink said Ukraine will decide how far they launch Western-supplied rockets. “The issue of the distance of strikes will be decided by the Armed Forces of Ukraine independently,” she said. Russian media reported her comments as Ukraine told U.S. officials that they wouldn’t strike Russian territory. Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the assurances “worthless.” – D.M.
CHINA STATE- BACKED HACKERS EXPLOIT NEW MICROSOFT BUG: Chinese state-backed hackers associated with Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) group TA413 are actively exploiting a zero-day vulnerability, dubbed “Follina”, in the Microsoft Office suite of applications. ‘Follina’ affects Microsoft Office 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021, Office ProPlus, and Office 365.
