SITUATIONAL AWARENESS
U.S. LACKS WILDLAND FIREFIGHTERS AHEAD OF BUSY FIRE SEASON: The U.S. Forestry service reported it has only met 50% of its hiring goals for wildland firefighters in several critical regions as widespread drought conditions promise a busy wildland firefighting season. National Federation of Federal Employees union representative Max Alonzo says efforts to increase the base wage of $15 per hour are “way too little, way too late.”
U.S. LACKS LOGISTICS SUPPORT TO CONFRONT CHINA IN THE PACIFIC: A recent Department of Defense report has revealed that the U.S. military lacks the logistics infrastructure and material to confront China in a future armed conflict in the Indo-Pacific region. The Assessment was included in the long-term program planning document for the DoD’s Pacific Deterrence Initiative (PDI). The document, delivered to Congress in April, reportedly included language indicating a sense of urgency over rising tensions in the region.
PUTIN’S “VICTORY DAY SPEECH” SEES NO SIGNIFICANT ACTION: Russian President Vladimir Putin gave his “Victory Day” speech overnight, and so far we’ve seen no significant activity as a result. According to unnamed intelligence officials cited in American media, Russia was expected to declare victory in Ukraine on 09 MAY, while Russian media over the past week had been talking up an expansion of the Ukraine war.
ARMY DESIGNATES NEW AIRBORNE DIVISION FOR THE ARCTIC: The U.S. Army redesignated Alaska-based units into the 11th Airborne Division, which will remain tasked to defend the Arctic. The name change comes as the Army tries to develop a “sense of identity” for soldiers stationed in Alaska.
