Good morning, and welcome to the Global Situation Report for Friday, 05 July 2024.


  • Global Rollup
    • Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief Romeo Brawner Jr. announced new Identify Friend or Foe and Rules of engagement for the Philippines. Servicemembers will now wear a full-color Philippine flag for identification and respond with “proportional” force in defense, e.g., knives versus knives.
    • China connected its largest electrical storage facility to its power grid last week. The facility can store up to 1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and power 150,000 homes for a day. 
    • According to Taiwan’s Economic Affairs Ministry, Minister Kuo Jyh-huei will sign a letter of intent on economic cooperation with the Texas state government on Sunday. Texas Governor Greg Abbott is expected to meet with Taiwan President Lai Ching-te during Abbott’s visit to Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. 
    • NATO is expected to release a document on expanding cooperation with Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea, collectively known as the Indo-Pacific Four (IP4), during next week’s NATO summit. 
    • Canada’s Prime Minister issued a warning for all Canadians to leave Lebanon while commercial flights are still available and stood up a task force to further monitor the situation.
    • Russian President Vladimir Putin announced plans for a new Eurasian security architecture. Putin said Russia’s goal is an “indivisible security and development to replace the outdated Euro-centric and Euro-Atlantic models which gave unilateral advantages to individual countries.”
    • After expressing interest in joining the BRICS economic alliance, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey intends to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), as well. Erdogan added that he wants Turkey to join as a full member, not just a dialogue partner.
