Global SITREP for Friday, 14 June 2024

Good morning, and welcome to the Global Situation Report for Friday, 14 June 2024.

  • Global Rollup
    • Atin Ito, the Filipino group responsible for the civilian resupply mission around the Spratly Islands last month, intends to normalize their large-scale resupply missions. (This behavior would routinely risk arrest and confrontation with the Chinese Coast Guard and Navy. However, it would also demonstrate a civilian commitment to Philippine sovereignty over its Exclusive Economic Zone. – J.V.)
    • South Korea-Japan-U.S. trilateral exercise Freedom Edge will start in the latter half of this month to practice a multidomain response to North Korean aggression. China’s People’s Liberation Army published an article calling the exercise “a significant threat to world peace and security.”
    • The G7 is scheduled to discuss how to counter China’s trade practices without starting a trade war with China. On the docket are China’s electrical vehicles, rare earth mineral export restrictions, and Chinese dual-use exports to Russia.
    • Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is set to announce sanctions on China for sending dual-use material to Russia in support of the war in Ukraine. The sanctions will mirror the U.S. sanctions on Chinese companies for the same thing.
    • Russian President Vladimir Putin offered an immediate ceasefire with Ukraine if Ukraine withdraws from Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, recognizes those four oblasts and Crimea as integral parts of Russia, and stops its accession to NATO. (The addition of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia to Russian territorial claims indicates they view themselves as negotiating from a position of strength. – J.V.)

THAT’S A WRAP: This does it for today’s edition. Thank you for reading. If you know folks who would also like to receive this email, would you please forward it to them? We appreciate you spreading the word. – M.S.
