Global SITREP for Monday, 16 September 2024

Good morning, and welcome to the Global Situation Report for Monday, 16 September 2024.

  • Global Rollup
    • China’s blockade of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ship anchored at Sabina Shoal succeeded. The PCG ship left the shoal to resupply and provide medical attention to its crew. The Philippine government vows to send another PCG vessel to maintain a presence at the shoal. (The Chinese will likely take aggressive actions to stop the new ship from anchoring. – J.V.)
    • The U.S. and U.K. delayed a decision to authorize Ukrainian strikes into Russian territory until this week, when they will meet on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. U.S. Admiral Rob Bauer voiced support for Ukrainian long range strikes saying, “Every nation that is attacked has the right to defend itself. And that right doesn’t stop at the border of your own nation.”
    • Taiwan sent a delegation to the U.S. to ensure timely delivery of weapons systems. Taiwan is also conducting the first Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee meeting this week to identify responsibilities for 20,000 civilian defense personnel. (Taiwan is demonstrating a lack of trust in the U.S. that is likely to reverberate with other regional allies. – J.V.)

THAT’S A WRAP: This does it for today’s edition. Thank you for reading. If you know folks who would also like to receive this email, would you please forward it to them? We appreciate you spreading the word. – M.S.
