- Chinese President Xi Jinping declared Serbia to be the first European country with a “shared future” at a joint press conference with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. (“Shared future,” a modern Chinese phrase, is likely a callback to Imperial China’s heavenly mandate called “tianxia.” Shared future and tianxia both denote an inclusion in the Chinese order. As Xi notes, this is the first European state, he likely intends to extend this status to others. – J.V.)
