Global SITREP for Thursday, 25 July 2024

Good morning, and welcome to the Global Situation Report for Thursday, 25 July 2024.

  • Global Rollup
    • Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council declared mainland China’s “One China” principle to be a threat to Taiwanese sovereignty. The Council also called on China to abandon its efforts to “impose a Chinese political agenda on the Taiwanese public through military intimidation or economic coercion.”
    • China and Russia conducted a joint bomber patrol over the Chukchi Sea, Bering Sea, and North Pacific yesterday, entering the U.S. Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). Fighters assigned to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) escorted the bombers while they were in the ADIZ.
    • Japan and the U.S. will have their latest defense 2+2 meeting this Sunday, where the officials are expected to begin negotiations on “extended deterrence,” including potentially protecting Japan with nuclear weapons. Chinese and Russian defense commentators are decrying this as an escalation in the Asia Pacific and a violation of Japan’s World War II terms of surrender.
    • Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) members sent their highest-ranking prosecutors and Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure representatives to Kyrgyzstan to discuss “digital security.” (China and Russia have frequently warned their allies to be on the lookout for color revolutions. This meeting could be a preventative measure for identifying any potential avenues for a color revolution. – J.V.)
    • Russia is sending another trio of ships to Cuba from 27-30 July. The ships will include a frigate, a cadet training ship, and a tanker. The frigate does not carry any offensive weapons except for torpedoes.

THAT’S A WRAP: This does it for today’s edition. Thank you for reading. If you know folks who would also like to receive this email, would you please forward it to them? We appreciate you spreading the word. – M.S.
