Good morning, and welcome to the Global Situation Report for Tuesday, 10 September 2024.
- Global Rollup
- North Korea’s Kim Jong Un announced that North Korea would “redouble its measures and efforts to make all the armed forces of the state, including the nuclear force, fully ready for combat.”
- The Quadrilateral Dialogue partners (U.S., Japan, India, and Australia) will hold a meeting in Wilmington, Delaware on 21 September. (Moving outside of D.C. means moving security personnel. Expect heightened security in the area. – J.V.)
- China is holding its China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum from 12-14 September to increase cooperation on green technology and digital technology development in the Caribbean. (The Forum is likely to result in a larger Chinese presence in the Caribbean. Green technology would create a greater dependence on China while the digital technologies are likely going to have dual-use potential. – J.V.)
- China announced its intention to retrieve Martian soil and rock samples by 2028 in an effort to gain a significant lead in the latest space race. (SpaceX, the leading entity for American space exploration, intends to have several unmanned missions prior to a manned mission in 2029. SpaceX will likely bring some samples back for future planning. This will likely drive China to conduct cyber attacks on SpaceX to keep this milestone with China. – J.V.)
- The Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, called on NATO to have a joint response to Russian drones entering Latvian and Romanian airspace over the weekend. The Latvian defense ministry recalled an agreement at the NATO Washington Summit this summer to “strengthen air defence on NATO’s eastern flank by introducing a more active rotational air defence model.”
THAT’S A WRAP: This does it for today’s edition. Thank you for reading. If you know folks who would also like to receive this email, would you please forward it to them? We appreciate you spreading the word. – M.S.
