SITUATIONAL AWARENESS

CHINA APPROACHES FIVE COUNTRIES FOR MILITARY BASES: According to the Hong Kong Post, China has approached at least five countries to discuss the stationing of naval assets. If the report is true, China wants Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, Thailand, and potentially others, such as the Solomon Islands, to be home to new Chinese military bases. China currently has only one known foreign military base, which is in Djibouti on the Horn of Africa, although they reportedly signed a secret agreement to use a Cambodian naval base.

RUSSIA: WE WILL TAKE ACTION ON FINLAND: Russian officials continue to issue threats about Finland’s security status before joining NATO next month. Russian spokesman Peskov said Finland joining NATO is “definitely” a threat to Russia’s security. “Russia will be forced to take retaliatory steps, both of a military-technical and other nature, in order to stop the threats to its national security arising in this regard,” according to a statement from Russia’s Foreign Ministry.

BIDEN TO PUSH FOR CRIME ACTION IN SPEECH TO STATES: President Joe Biden is expected to address a summer crime wave in a speech today. He’s reportedly going to urge states to use $10 billion funds from the $1.9T American Rescue Plan to hire more police officers. According to a White House statement, the “administration is moving decisively to act with a whole-of-government approach as we enter the summer months when cities typically experience a spike in violence.”
