INFLATION IN EUROPE HITS RECORD HIGHS, U.S. GOV OFFICIALS WARN OF IMPENDING RECESSION: Inflation in Europe hit its highest level since the adoption of the euro. Annual inflation across the euro currency reached 8.1% in May. Increases in energy and food prices were the driving factors in record inflation. Europe’s largest economies recorded big jumps in consumer prices with Germany rising 8.7%, France 5.8%, Spain 8.5% and Italy 7.3%. Smaller economies such as Estonia posted an annual inflation rate of 20.1% with Lithuania at 18.5%. This week in the U.S., multiple economists and government officials began warning of a major global recession.
CISA SAYS MIDTERM VOTING MACHINES AT RISK: The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said Dominion voting machines in “at least 16 states” have nine separate vulnerabilities requiring updates and safeguards before November’s midterm elections. CISA Director Brandon Wells said states need to enact “defensive measures to reduce the risk of exploitation of these vulnerabilities.” The CISA alert follows a court-ordered cyber research effort by J. Alex Halderman related to a 2017 Georgia lawsuit. – D.M.
EUROPOL: UKR WEAPONS COULD GO TO CRIMINALS: The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) warned the weapons shipments to Ukraine could fall into criminal hands. “At some point the war will be over. We want to avoid a situation like the one that followed the war in the Balkans 30 years ago…The weapons from this war are still being used by criminal groups today,” Europol Director Catherine De Bolle said. – D.M.
