SITUATIONAL AWARENESS

RUSSIA COULD MOVE TO ARREST U.S. OFFICIALS ABROAD: Moscow imposed sanctions on 61 U.S. officials, including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, along with multiple leading defense and media executives. The sanctions reportedly were in response to what Russian officials call “constantly expanding U.S. sanctions against Russian political and public figures as well as representatives of domestic business.” Russia’s sanctioning of U.S. officials and business leaders is likely the first step in declaring them “fair game” for arrest and detention abroad. – M.M.

FOOD INSECURITY HITS NORTH AFRICA: Cereal prices across Africa surged this week due to a slump in grain exports from Ukraine and disrupted supplies of fertilizer from Russia. As a result, Chad’s government declared a food emergency due to a lack of grain supplies. The cost of basic food staples has also risen in Niger with prices soaring over 30%. On Friday, the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization reported that international wheat prices have risen for the fourth consecutive month, with May data showing an increase of 5.6%. – M.M.

PROGRESSIVE ORGS PUSH SCHUMER FOR PERMANENT PAYMENTS: In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Schumer (D-NY), the NAACP, National Urban League, MoveOn, and 47 other advocacy organizations said the Childhood Tax Credit (CTC) direct payment should be permanent. The letter also calls for a permanent expansion to “immigrant children as the most immediate, meaningful response to higher prices that Congress can deliver to 36 million families, especially Black and Latino families…” The letter claims the amount required to extend CTC payments “is too small to meaningfully increase inflation across the whole economy.” – D.M.
